Jargon Busting

 

In school we use lots of words and terms that could be confusing. Here is a list of some of them with explanations to help.

 

APP – Assessing Pupil Progress. A structured approach to assessing the progress of children in Reading, Writing, Mathematics and other areas.

 

Cover Supervisor. TA who is qualified to take classes when teachers are out for shorter periods e.g. single lessons or part of a day.

 

EAL – English as an Additional Language. Children with English as a second language. EAL children may be fluent in English but it isn’t their first language.

 

EYFS – Early Years Foundation Stage. A framework of care and education of children from birth to five years of age. Nursery (Foundation 1) and Reception (Foundation 2).

 

FSM – Free School Meals. Pupils who are entitled to free school meals. This criteria is set out by the local authority.

 

Genres. A type of text eg diary writing, non-chronological reports, stories with a familiar setting.

 

G&T – Gifted and Talented. A register of provision for pupils who are identified as being gifted and talented.

 

HLTAs – Higher Level Teaching Assistants. HLTAs are qualified to cover lessons when teachers are out of class.

 

KS1 – Key Stage 1. Years 1 & 2.

LKS2 – Lower Key Stage 2. Years 3 and 4.

UKS2 – Upper Key Stage 2. Years 5 and 6.

 

LA – Local Authority. Eastwood Primary School is in the Bradford Council Local Authority.

 

MFL – Modern Foreign Languages. Refers to the teaching of Modern Foreign Languages such as French, German and Spanish. At Eastwood, pupils learn Spanish.

 

NC – National Curriculum. A framework which sets out what pupils should be learning. Teachers plan and deliver lessons based on the National Curriculum.

 

NtE – New to English. Refers to children whose first language(s) is/are not English and who may not yet be speaking English fluently, if at all.

 

OLC - Outdoor Learning Centre. Run by Mrs Smith and Mr Parker. Pupils participate in outdoor activities once-a-fortnight.

 

PE – Physical Education. Refers to the teaching of physical education, including games, athletics, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities.

 

PPA – Planning, Preparation and Assessment. Release time for teachers to complete the stated tasks. Children are divided into different activities and taught by a variety of different teachers/providers.

 

PSHE – Personal, Social, Health Education. Lessons that focus on the personal, social and health education of pupils.

 

RE – Religious Education. The teaching of faiths and beliefs. Teaching focusses on Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism.

 

SATS – Statutory Assessment Tests. Assessments of pupils in Reading, Writing and Maths carried out in years 2 and 6.This is statutory and pupil results are submitted to the Local Authority.

 

TA – Teaching Assistant. Teaching Assistants work to support pupils. They work alongside class teachers.
