Our final topic is 'The Seaside'. We will be adventuring to Morecambe seaside where the children will get to experience the seaside first hand. The children will be learning about the features of the seaside, thinking about which features are human or physical features. In English we will be writing a non-fiction fact file about the Seaside, writing postcards, leaflets, recount about their visit and looking at Winnie at The Seaside. In maths the children will be re-visiting calculations and learning about capacity. The children will be given a range of creative opportunities such as creating moving fish and seagulls, wax seas creatures, hand print crabs and seaside pictures. We will be exploring what animals live in the ocean by learning lots of facts about the creatures. We are very excited about our fun-filled topic.
During the summer 1 term are topic was Growth. The children explored all things that grow and learned how they grow. To help the children understand this concept we planted our own sunflowers, helped them grow and recorded our observations. We looked at the features of a plant and understood the functions of the features. In English we explored a range of texts such as: 'Oliver's Vegetables'. We compared the tradition tale of 'Jack and the Beanstalk' to the modern story 'Jim and the Beanstalk. We learnt how to write in chronological order using time connectives. In maths we learnt about fractions by finding a half and a quarter of an object, shape or amount. We learnt how to work with measurements by recording the heights of our plants. The children been growing in their learning by working hard and preserving.
We are took the children on a magical journey into the world of Harry Potter. We watched the film 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone'. The children were sorted into the four houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. The children also dressed up as the Harry Potter characters. To immerse the children into the magical world we made potions and magic wands. In English we learnt how to structure a story, thought carefully about characters and the different settings within the story. We also learnt about imperative verbs by writing their own instructions and recipes. Year 1 also learnt to write in a range of styles such as letter writing, narrative writing, character descriptions and explored settings. In Maths we learnt to recognise different coins and notes. The children learnt to explain, using mathematical terminology, how to solve a money word problem. We also learnt number bonds to 10 and 20, counting up in 5's and 10's. The children have work immensely hard. We are very proud of their enthusiasm and commitment to learning this half term.
We have had an exciting half term, as we learnt all about the story Lost and Found which is a journey for two unlikely friends who travel to the South Pole. We have investigated and experimented the change to water when it become colder. We have compared the South Pole to our own environment, finding similarities and differences. In our English we learnt to write in a range of styles, such as: writing posters, labeling, information books and a narrative. In maths the children learnt how to multiply and divide practically, and draw pictures to represent their number sentences. They also learnt to count in 2's.To rein in the New Year we discussed our New Year's resolutions and learned about the Chinese New year while also exploring their culture and traditions. The children worked really hard, we are very proud of them!
Within this half term our topic has been light and dark. We learnt about different light sources and experimented with various light sources. To link to our topic we learnt different facts about Neil Armstrong and create a non-fiction book about the famous astronaut. The children also learn how to write in a range of different styles such as labeling, recounts and narratives. We had two main texts The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch and Laura's Star. In maths we learnt the names and properties of 2D and 3D shapes, we explore our local environment and search for various shapes within the environment. We also looked at missing numbers and sequences, and we are beginning to learn to explain our answers using mathematical vocabulary. The children are beginning to make fantastic progress in all their learning.
In the Autumn term 1 we learnt about ourselves. We learnt about our bodies, senses and families. The children enjoyed learning about their environment using their hearing and sight. We had lots of fun using our sense of taste to try different fruits and various flavours. In English we looked at a range of texts that related to our topic- ourselves. Using these stories the children wrote recounts and explored a range of reading exercises to strengthen their understanding of the texts. At the end of the term we looked at the gingerbread man and got stuck in, baking our very own gingerbread man. We linked this to maths by looking at weighing amounts. In maths we developed our knowledge and strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. We are very proud of the positive start the children made this year.
